Proactive Vaccine Outreach Strategies: American Samoa “Vaccinate to Registrate” and Jingle Competition

Key Partners: American Samoa Community College, University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), the Department of Health, the Office of Protection and Advocacy (OPAD), and South Seas Broadcasting

The American Samoa UCEDD partnered with the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) to complete a vaccine access activity targeting college students. The activity provided vaccinated students a means to receive a backpack and waive their registration fee for Summer courses. Seventy-nine (79) students received promotional backpacks, and 52 new vaccinations were linked to this activity. College students were targeted for this activity because most fall in the 16-30 age range, with a low vaccination percentage.

They also organized a jingle competition seeking a local person to create a one-minute musical jingle for an advertisement promoting the younger generation to receive their vaccination. The following were criteria and requirements for participation:

• Incorporate the social media slogan #SleeveUp for vaccinations;

• Jingle must be one to two minutes long;

• Judged on creativity, diversity, and equity;

• Must be performed for judges;

Judges included representatives from the Department of Health, the Office of Protection and Advocacy (OPAD), and South Seas Broadcasting. An 18-year old college student winner shared his experience through the lyrics about how he overcame vaccine hesitancy. Receiving more information about the vaccine gave him more vaccine confidence. Additionally, protecting his family was very important in his decision to be vaccinated. UCEDD sponsored studio recording time and radio airtime for the jingle to be played ten times per day for 31 days. To date, this jingle is played on three different radio stations.
