Here is today’s Monday Mailer for you:

Texas Medicaid Administrative Claiming

Texas was approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to conduct Medicaid Administrative Claiming (MAC) for No Wrong Door functions! This brings the national total to 29 states currently claiming and 14 states planning to claim. See the updated MAC map here. The No Wrong Door Resource Center helps states enhance or establish MAC. Email nowrongdoor@lewin.com for a consult.

Brain Injury Awareness Month

As we recognize Brain Injury Awareness Month in March, it is important to acknowledge that brain injury remains one of the most significant—yet often under-recognized and under-coordinated—public health challenges in the United States. Nearly 3 million Americans sustain a brain injury each year, and more than 5 million people live with long-term disability related to brain injury. To support learning, awareness, and action, we encourage you to explore several timely and practical resources:

  • Interested in brain injury programs, policy, or contacts in your state? Visit the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators (NASHIA) Guide to State Government Program Brain Injury Policies, Funding, and Services to learn more about brain injury initiatives, programs, and leadership across the country.
  • Words matter. Communicating clearly and consistently about brain injury is essential, as the language we use helps shape public attitudes and expectations about life after brain injury. A joint statement on communicating about brain injury was developed by advocates, individuals with lived experience, and professionals to support thoughtful and respectful communication. A highlight of this resource is the clarification that some people recover quickly from a brain injury and have no lasting effects. But for others, the effects can last for months, years, or a lifetime. This is why brain injury is considered a chronic condition.
  • For a quick and accessible overview, read the 2026 State of Brain Injury Report published by the Brain Injury Association of America. This brief resource highlights key information about acquired brain injury, including symptoms, incidence, economic impact, and the disproportionate impact on certain populations—including older adults.

Together, increased awareness, clearer communication, and stronger coordination through a No Wrong Door framework can help ensure that people with brain injury have access to the understanding, supports, and services they need.

Building a Care Transitions Program: Lessons from the Field

Developing a care transitions program is a multi-year endeavor, and many community-based organizations (CBOs) face the same early hurdles: defining their value proposition, building relationships with medical providers, and clarifying billing pathways. One recent insight from the field: while hospitals are natural partners, engaging insurance partners early can also be highly effective, as payers have a broader stake in patient stability across settings and may offer a more direct path to sustainable contracts.

Additional considerations for CBOs at a similar stage:

  1. Look within your own organization. Clinicians and provider-connected members on your own board can open doors and shape your approach.
  2. Start small and consider program costs from day one. Knowing program costs supports affordable pilot programs that demonstrate outcomes while building the case for long-term contracts.
  3. Lead with listening. Understanding what healthcare partners care about before pitching your services can expedite your collaboration and build trust faster.
  4. Back it with data. A clear value proposition tied to outcomes is essential for sustaining payer and provider relationships.
