DCW Strategies Center Webinar

The Direct Care Workforce (DCW) Strategies Center is hosting a webinar on “AI and the Direct Care Workforce: Perspectives on Adoption, Ethics, and What Comes Next” on July 22, from 2:00-3:30 PM ET. This panel, which includes Kelly Cronin, ACL’s Deputy Administrator for Innovation and Partnership, will bring together provider, research, and federal voices to examine artificial intelligence (AI) adoption through a worker-centered lens—giving attendees a clearer picture of where the field is, what the risks are, and what responsible AI integration in home- and community-based services requires. DCW Strategies Center Technical Assistance

The Direct Care Workforce Strategies Center announced a new round of technical assistance for states. Selected states will participate in a structured technical assistance experience from September 2026 to June 2027, receiving up to 250 hours of support to advance direct care workforce priorities.  

Technical assistance may support:

• Retention and worker well-being
• Career pathways and training
• Workforce data and measurement  
• Cross-agency partnerships  

Selected states will receive access to nationally recognized subject matter experts, customized support aligned with state priorities and future goals, peer learning with other state leaders, an annual in-person convening, and practical tools, resources, and implementation strategies. SARCOA Spotlight

The Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging (SARCOA), the aging and disability resource center for seven counties in southeast Alabama, provides care coordination and navigation support for over 100,000 older adults and individuals with disabilities. Through programs such as Hospital to Home and Staying At Home, SARCOA supports care transitions by assisting individuals following hospital discharge with benefits counseling, options counseling for long-term services and supports, and connections to community-based resources that help individuals remain safely at home.

SARCOA’s Community Care Solutions (CCS) program operates through contractual partnerships with healthcare entities to deliver transitional and chronic care management for individuals in Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). The program is supported by a 55-provider community-based network serving Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Veteran populations. The model embeds health coaches into care teams to strengthen post-discharge follow-up and coordination with community-based services. Through this model, SARCOA demonstrated financial sustainability, with transitional and chronic care management revenues now exceeding operating costs, yielding a 200% growth in CCS revenue. Reported outcomes from this partnership include a 447% increase in annual wellness visits, a 32.7% reduction in emergency department visits, a 25.3% decrease in hospital readmissions, and a decrease in practice cost per patient per year among the patients. This work was recognized with the 2024 John A. Hartford Foundation Business Innovation Award.
