ACL Awards Over $3M to Strengthen Respite Care Services Nationwide

ACL has awarded eight new State Program Enhancement Grants under its Lifespan Respite Care Program, which supports state efforts to develop, enhance, and coordinate systems of accessible, community-based respite services. These projects will strengthen respite care services, expand partnerships, reduce barriers, and support family caregivers of all ages, disabilities, and health conditions.

Fiscal Year 2025 State Award Recipients

  • Alabama Department of Senior Services
  • Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services
  • New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department
  • New York State Office for the Aging
  • Oklahoma Department of Human Services
  • South Dakota Department of Human Services
  • Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability
  • Wisconsin Department of Health Services

States must develop or improve respite care at the state and local levels, provide respite services for caregivers of children or adults, train and recruit respite care workers and volunteers, share information with caregivers about available respite and support services, and help them access those services. These new grants will strengthen state respite systems and ensure families have better access to high-quality, sustainable caregiving support. Lifespan respite programs are required to coordinate with Aging and Disability Resource Centers under federal statute.

Inform USA: Community Navigation Sector

Over the past year, Inform USA – the professional membership association for the Information & Referral (I&R) sector – undertook a broad effort to reframe and reposition I&R for greater public understanding and support. This effort was informed by member input including interviews and an in-depth member survey. Inform USA and its members have used the term Information and Referral (I&R) to describe the work of helping people connect to resources for over 50 years. However, the field has continued to grow and evolve. At the association’s recent fall conference, a new name for the sector was shared: The Community Navigation Sector. It is intended to better reflect the role organizations play in helping people find their way through complex systems of care, whether in times of crisis, or moments of everyday need. Read more here.
