ADRCs Poised to Provide Person-Centered Counseling on COVID-19 Risks and Vaccine Decision-Making

Person-centered counseling is all about facilitating informed decision making. Through the use of person-centered counseling, the NWD System will empower individuals to make informed choices about their LTSS options consistent with their personal goals, and to successfully navigate the various organizations, agencies, and other resources in their communities that provide LTSS. (NWD Key Elements) This past year, ADRCs provided person-centered counseling to over 1 million people. (ADRC Semi-Annual Reports 2020, 2021)

Facilitating informed decision making also applies when it comes to vaccine confidence. The AD Council’s “It’s Up to You” campaign was based on focus groups conducted to learn about how people come to decisions about the COVID-19 vaccine. The result? Informed decision making is key, thus the tagline It’s Up to You. The site offers downloadable ads in many media forms for a variety of situations and is also available in multiple languages. In addition to one-on-one person-centered counseling some ADRCs may also want to offer web-based resources. BellAge, a company focused on artificial intelligence to improve the lives of older adults, has developed a personalized tool called COVID-19 Check-up that makes it easy for individuals to understand their level of risk and take steps to reduce those risks. They have also worked with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs to develop the FloridaSafeSurvey.com which takes only a few minutes to complete. Respondents of the survey anonymously answer questions and then review their results, with respect to COVID-19 situations, to see how different actions affect their own health, and the health of others.
