The Houston-Galveston area agency on aging (AAA) advances its No Wrong Door approach by building strong partnerships across a broad geographic area spanning the Gulf Coast region, which includes both urban and rural communities, to improve access to benefits and services. Recognizing that their Houston-based office is not easily accessible to all residents within its service area, they collaborate with libraries in counties such as Wharton, Montgomery, and Liberty to host monthly outreach and enrollment events. These “pop-up” events provide in-person assistance to older adults, individuals with disabilities, and their families, helping them navigate and enroll in programs such as Medicare, Medicare Savings Program, Low Income Subsidy, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and Medicaid. By bringing services directly into local communities, they reduce access barriers to ensure individuals can connect with available supports regardless of where they live. 

In addition, the Houston-Galveston AAA expanded its reach through strategic healthcare partnerships that bring benefits access directly into trusted community settings. For example, they partnered with MidCoast Medical Center in Palacios, Texas, to certify staff as Benefits Counselors, ensuring year-round support for the area’s small fishing community. The Houston-Galveston AAA also collaborates with the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), where hospital social workers are certified to help patients access benefits during and after hospitalization, helping to bridge critical gaps in care and support successful transitions back to the community. UTMB also hosts an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, where the Houston-Galveston AAA provides monthly Medicare 101 classes and one-on-one counseling sessions.  

Together, these efforts strengthened access to benefits information and enrollment assistance across the region. The Houston-Galveston AAA deeply values these partnerships for their role in extending the reach of services, connecting individuals to needed supports, and advancing its mission of helping older adults and people with disabilities access available resources.
